The Selah Police Department reported a breach in the Yakima River and evacuation warnings east of the 500 block of East Naches Avenue as well as South Rushmore on Thursday night.

Monson Fruit and Graham Packaging stopped production and were evacuated for the night, the post said. Monson Fruit had a crew back to work Friday morning, Selah Mayor Roger Bell said in an interview shortly after 10 a.m. Friday.

Both businesses still had some water over roadways entering their properties, but the water level had dropped significantly from last night, he said.

About five or six homes off Rushmore, on the east side of town closer to the river, were impacted by flooding, Bell said. And a few people with livestock moved them to the Central Washington State Fair fairgrounds in Yakima.

"We're doing fairly good right now," Bell said. "The water's dropped about a foot from what it was at 11 o' clock last night. That was around 8:30 this morning. ... You can tell where it had been last night. It had dropped significantly."

Playland Riverside Park, "our normal place of flooding," Bell said, flooded two days ago. Flooding came after the Taylor Ditch system was blown out, he said. Parts of the RiverRidge and Elks Club golf courses were also flooded.

"We never had any real damage from water to the public works department, even though we had some water over the road down there," he said.

City workers will be out all day Friday "just monitoring. ... We have some areas we do not want people to go into because of potential damage by vehicles to roadways by driving on them when there's standing water."

Water levels are projected to keep dropping, Bell said. "So we're just in the monitoring stage right now. We'll continue to do that until we feel that it's receded enough that there's no danger to citizens or property."
