Every September, National Recovery Month shines a light on the courage of people in recovery, the dedication of those who support them, and the programs that make second chances possible.

For more than five decades, has been at the heart of this movement in Central Washington. Sundown M Ranch opened in 1968 and was the first residential treatment facility for the treatment of alcoholism in Washington State. Since opening, Sundown has helped tens of thousands of people struggling with addiction rebuild their lives.

A mission rooted in compassion

Sundown’s philosophy has always been simple: treat people with dignity, meet them where they are, and provide the tools they need to succeed. Today, the Sundown offers inpatient and outpatient programs, family education, and aftercare services—all designed to help individuals and their loved ones heal together.

“Recovery Month is a chance to remind people that addiction is not a dead end,†says Scott Munson, Executive Director. “We see people every day who come to Sundown at their lowest point and leave with hope, strength, and a plan for their future."

By the numbers

  • More than 2,500 patients served annually.
  • 95% of patients would recommend Sundown M Ranch to others.
  • Over 1,000 family members participate in education programs each year.
  • Thousands of alumni living in recovery across Washington and beyond.

These numbers represent more than statistics—they represent families reunited, parents regaining custody of children, and individuals who return to their communities with renewed purpose.

Programs that meet people where they are

Sundown’s services are designed to support every stage of recovery:

  • Inpatient treatment provides a structured environment with counseling, education, and medical support.
  • Family education programs give loved one’s tools to understand addiction and support recovery.
  • Specialized care for co-occurring disorders ensures patients receive integrated mental health support.
  • Outpatient and aftercare services help sustain long-term recovery beyond the Ranch.

These programs work together to ensure that recovery is not a single event but a lifelong journey.

Helping youth find their path

One of Sundown M Ranch’s most vital programs is its treatment for adolescents. Addiction and substance use can begin early, and without intervention, the consequences can follow young people for a lifetime. By addressing these issues during adolescence, Sundown offers not just treatment but a chance at an entirely different future.

Teens at Sundown receive age-appropriate care that recognizes the unique pressures they face: peer influence, family conflict, mental health struggles, and academic challenges. The youth program blends counseling, education, and peer support in an environment that emphasizes both accountability and encouragement.

“Working with adolescents means addressing not just substance use, but also the emotional, social, and academic pressures that young people face,†says Youth Clinical Supervisor, Jered Carter. “When a teen finds healing and recovery, it gives them back their future—and gives their family hope again.â€

By supporting youth at this critical stage, Sundown M Ranch not only helps individual teens—it strengthens entire families and communities for generations to come.

The power of community

Addiction often isolates individuals, but recovery thrives on connection. Sundown partners with local organizations, healthcare providers, and community groups to ensure patients have resources and networks of support long after leaving treatment.

“Recovery is about community, connection, and knowing you’re not alone,†says Jason Schilling, Outpatient Program Manager.

Looking ahead

As Sundown M Ranch looks to the future, its commitment remains the same: making treatment accessible, effective, and compassionate. New initiatives, expanded family programs, enhanced adolescent services, and stronger aftercare options continue to strengthen Sundown’s role as a leader in recovery care.

For Sundown, Recovery Month is both a celebration of how far the community has come and a call to action for the work that remains.

How the community can help

Recovery Month is also a reminder that everyone can play a role:

  • Talk openly about addiction and recovery to reduce stigma.
  • Support loved ones by encouraging treatment.
  • Share resources like with those who may need help.
  • Celebrate the successes of friends, coworkers, and neighbors who are in recovery.

Closing message

Every recovery story is a victory—not just for the individual, but for families, workplaces, and the community as a whole.

“This September, and every month, Sundown stands ready to help anyone who needs it,†says Scott Munson. “Recovery is healing. Recovery is local. And recovery is possible.â€
