EAST WENATCHEE聽鈥 Four individual winners propelled West Valley's boys in too second place, just eight points behind host Eastmont after the first day of the CBBN district track and field championships.
Benjamin Beardemphl recorded a personal-best javelin throw of 185 feet, 0 inches聽鈥 the second-best mark in 4A this season and good for ninth in Valley history聽鈥 another Rams thrower, Samuel French, won the shot put thanks to a throw of 55 feet, 9 inches. Rams sprinter Cody Floren continued his dominance in the 100 meters with a winning time of 10.98 seconds while Micah Jones leapt to victory with a high jump of 6 feet, 4 inches.
Freshman standout Callie Orcutt gave West Valley its lone win on the girls' side, cruising to a 1,600 meter time of 5:15.81. Eisenhower's Kian Compton edged out Davis junior Josh Whitney to win the聽 boys 1,600 meters in 4:20.81 and Ella Craig captured the 100 hurdles title in 14.96 seconds.
The top two finishers qualified for next week's 4A state meet in each event, so Whitney, Ike's Donovan Collins and Hadley Hanchett in the 400 and West Valley's Elizabeth French in the discus all punched their tickets to Tacoma. Any competitors, like Sunnyside's Jair Arregun in the 400 and West Valley's Timothy Balderston in the high jump, who beat the qualifying standard in their respective events this season also earned a spot at state.
Ten more events for the girls and nine for the boys will be held Saturday at West Valley. The original schedule put the second day at Zaepfel Stadium, but race officials chose to move the meet in order to prepare Zaepfel for the 1A/2B/1B championships, which will begin next Thursday.

ELMA 9, NACHES VALLEY 2: At Richland, a two-run single by Eden Hayes in the first inning gave the Rangers the lead until the fourth and they gave up six runs in the sixth inning of a loser-out game. Naches Valley finished its season 10-14.
