Another day and another district title for Samuel French.
The West Valley junior won the discus during Saturday鈥檚 finals of the Class 4A District 5 championships on his home track, two days after capturing the shot victory at Eastmont.
French threw 153 feet, 7 inches to win the discus by a foot and earn WV鈥檚 boys their fourth individual district title. The Valley leader and school-record holder in the shot dominated that event Thursday at 55-9.
Davis junior Joshua Whitney rallied to edge West Valley鈥檚 Max Gallegos for the 800-meter win, 1:56.15 to 1:56.21. Eisenhower鈥檚 league-leading Kian Compton, who won Thursday鈥檚 1,600, scratched out of the 800.
The top two finishers qualified for the Class 4A state championships next week in Tacoma.
West Valley sophomore Cody Floren clipped defending champion Brady Jay of Moses Lake in Thursday鈥檚 100, but the ML senior flipped the result in Saturday鈥檚 tense 200, 22.05 to 22.07.
Eisenhower鈥檚 4x400 earned a trip to Tacoma, placing second in 3:26.88.
The highlight of the girls meet was the much-anticipated 800, where Wenatchee senior Allie Knoop turned back Yakima鈥檚 two freshmen stars. To earn her repeat title, Knoop timed a tactical 2:14.28 and was chased to the line by West Valley鈥檚 Callie Orcutt (2:14.67) and Eisenhower鈥檚 Hadley Hanchett (2:14.97). Hanchett met the state-qualifying standard.
Knoop, who outlasted Hanchett in Thursday鈥檚 400 while Orcutt won the 1,600, anchored Wenatchee鈥檚 4x400 to a swift 3:54.01 鈥 the state鈥檚 second-fastest time 鈥 in the meet鈥檚 final event. Davis senior Ella Craig broke the Pirates鈥 school record in the 300 hurdles, timing 44.64 for a narrow second to Eastmont鈥檚 three-time champion Shelby Howe (44.45).
Orcutt will be busy at state with four events after anchoring West Valley鈥檚 second-place 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
The Rams got two other runner-up efforts from Margo Fillmore in the 3,200 and Megan Parrish in the shot.
