Yakima County NAACP has planned events throughout June to celebrate Juneteenth, including a celebration Saturday at MLK Jr. Park.
The holiday recognizes June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in the United States were freed in Galveston, Texas, with the arrival of Union troops.
Yakima鈥檚 Juneteenth celebration will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at South Eighth and Beech streets. The celebration will include live music, food, resource booths, children's activities and more. There will be free meals for children 12 years and younger and honored citizens.
It will be proceeded by a Freedom Ride, which will start at 11:30 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church, 1604 W. Yakima Ave.
On Sunday, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church鈥檚 120th anniversary will include a lunch at 1 p.m. and an anniversary celebration at 3 p.m. The church is located at 515 S. Sixth St.
On June 15, the NAACP general meeting takes place from 5:30-8 p.m. at Henry Beauchamp Community Center, 1211 S. Seventh Ave., with a viewing of the film, 鈥淔arming While Black.鈥 Light refreshments will be served, and a discussion will follow the film.
Greater Faith Baptist Church, 816 S. Sixth St., will have 鈥淯nderstanding our History,鈥 a vacation Bible school from June 16-18. The vacation Bible school is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with light dinner provided. Children, teens and adults are welcome.
