Nearly one year after it opened, the Yakima Pap茅 Kenworth facility on the southern portion of the former Yakima Speedway site hosted company officials, community leaders and vendors for an open house celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony.

Pap茅聽CEO Jordan Pap茅, regional general manager Mitch Hatfield and聽Pap茅 Kenworth President Ryan聽Pap茅 joined Yakima Mayor Matt Brown on Wednesday for the event at 1701 Pacific Ave.

Tours of the 42,000-square-foot facility showed off its retail parts area, service department, parts warehouse and 15 service bays, enclosed wash bay and two storage bays.

The site is just west of Interstate 82 where Pacific Avenue curves and turns into 18th Street.

Lori Garlington, department assistant with聽Pap茅 Kenworth, said the facility opened last May after roughly one year of construction. Features include a lounge area including shower facilities in the service department, multiple conference rooms on the building鈥檚 second floor for employee training, and a sizable parts warehouse.

In the year it has been open, about 50 trucks are usually on site for service, Garlington said, and on Wednesday several 黑料福利社 businesses had vehicles inside service bays for repairs.

The companies included G.S. Long Co. of Yakima, the Zirkle Fruit Co., Nutrien Ag Solutions and a fuel tanker truck with Yakima Co-Op. A Yakima County Fire District 4 engine was also there, raised upon a lift in service bay 4.

Garlington said the new, state-of-the-art facility services vehicles from around the Northwest, and it replaces an older and smaller聽Pap茅 Kenworth Northwest location that was just south of the former speedway. Its hours are 7 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

A large selection of new Kenworth trucks are for sale on site, with used semi-trucks also available.

Pap茅聽Material Handling, selling forklifts and other such equipment, is nearby at 909 S. 18th St. and the John Deere聽Pap茅 Machinery Ag and Turf location remains at 3110 Fruitvale Blvd. in Yakima, selling lawnmowers, tractors and other agriculture equipment.

History of speedway

Based in Eugene, Ore.,聽Pap茅 Properties Inc. bought 16 acres on the southern portion of the Yakima Speedway property for nearly $3.6 million in 2021, according to the Yakima County Assessor鈥檚 Office.

The 46-acre speedway property was first listed for sale more than 15 years ago, and was relisted by the Pollock family in 2024 following the death of longtime owner Ted Pollock on Dec. 8, 2023.

According to Ted Pollock鈥檚 , he owned and operated Pollock Motors and Yakima Speedway in Yakima for more than 50 years.

Yakima Speedway was the first Pacific Northwest sanctioned NASCAR facility, the obituary stated, with Pollock promoting 17 jumps by Evel Knievel at the speedway during the stunt performer鈥檚 early career.

Pap茅鈥檚 purchase prompted the cancellation of the 2021 racing season at the speedway, and its buildings and grandstands were demolished in May 2022 to make way for the new聽Pap茅 Kenworth facility on the southern portion of the property.

A portion of the remaining 30 acres of the speedway property houses the Yakima Ice Rink, at 1700 E. Beech St., which has hosted skating and hockey programs since the 1950s. Fundraising efforts are underway by rink supporters to purchase the rink and聽the roughly 2 acres that houses it and the adjacent parking area.
