YAKIMA, Wash. -- Seven sets of human remains were claimed by loved ones this past month, the Yakima County Coroner鈥檚 Office reported.
Three people came forward to claim loved ones or friends after reading news reports about Coroner Jack Hawkins鈥 plans to move some of the cremated remains from his office to a burial vault at Tahoma Cemetery, Hawkins said earlier. Three other sets were removed from the vault at Tahoma Cemetery to be turned over to family members or friends when other urns were placed inside last month.
Since 2009, the Coroner鈥檚 Office has served as the county鈥檚 clearinghouse for human remains not claimed by family or friends. There are 164 cremated remains in the , with 75 in a donated vault at the city-owned cemetery. A headstone has been donated for the plot, and Hawkins said he is working on appropriate wording for it.
State law allows funeral directors to dispose of unclaimed civilian remains after 90 days. Veterans鈥 remains are turned over to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and are buried or inurned at a national or state veterans cemetery.
