The Kittitas Environmental Education Network will host a "What to Wear" workshop as part of its "Let's go hiking" series next Wednesday.
The workshops, which are held from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Yakima Canyon Interpretative Center and cost $25 each, are designed to develop skills and knowledge needed to feel comfortable and confident in the outdoors. They're active and hands-on, featuring advice from experienced instructors on how to acquire the best gear and equipment for outdoor adventures.
It's also an opportunity to meet like-minded people who share the same passion for nature and adventure. Sign up at 聽and two more workshops will follow聽鈥 "Etiquette and best practices" on Aug. 19 and "Backpacking basics" on Sept. 16聽鈥 prior to a group wilderness trip scheduled for Oct. 3-4.
CALENDAR
SATURDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekend fun run of 3 to 6 miles, with all paces and abilities welcome. Meet at 8 a.m. at the Yakima Greenway鈥檚 Gleed parking lot, at the northwest corner of Highway 12 and Old Naches Highway behind McIlrath Fruit.
ALSO SATURDAY: The Hard Core Runners Club will host the Grey Rock trail runs, a 12K starting at 8:30 a.m. and a 25K at 8 a.m. in the Ahtanum State Forest. Entry fees are $48.50 for the 12K and $55 for the 25K. All vehicles need a Discover Pass. Go to for more details and to register.
MONDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekly swim at Lake Myron. The group gathers at 6 p.m. with a kayaker and others on shore to keep an eye on swimmers and their gear.
WEDNESDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekly fun run at Franklin Park at 6 p.m. There will be options for a track workout or running on the streets.
GETTING OUTDOORS
TUESDAY: The Cascadians will host an easy hike at a location to be determined. Go to for more details.
ALSO TUESDAY:聽The Cascadians will host an informal paddle of five to six miles along the shoreline at the Bumping Lake picnic area/boating site off of State Route 410. Participants can go their own distance if they like, and kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are all welcome. Since Bumping Lake tends to have calmer water in the mornings before the wind ramps up, participants should be experienced handling choppy water and windy conditions and plan to be back at the day use for lunch around noon. All vehicles need a day use pass that can be purchased at the boat ramp and all paddlers must wear an approved personal flotation device and carry a whistle.聽Go to for more details and to see if plans have changed due to poor weather conditions before 5 p.m.
NEXT THURSDAY: The Cascadians will hike 9 miles round trip with 1,500 feet of elevation gain to Devil's Slide and Moon Rocks near Cliffdell, with a possible shorter option of 6 miles round trip with 1,000 feet of elevation gain to Devil's Slide and a lunch meadow.
