Ahtanum Youth Park welcome sign

This autumn display greets visitors to the Ahtanum Youth Park which is where the Yakima County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden is located.聽

The Yakima Area Arboretum's Garrett Brenden will host a Class in the Garden highlighting the best trees and woody shrubs for the Yakima area this Saturday at Ahtanum Youth Park.

Bring a chair and join the group at 10 a.m. in the space right next to the garden, behind the arborvitae. The Arboretum donated about 50 total small hornbeams, redbuds and lindens for participants to take home.

All plants are free, but attendees are encouraged to bring a 1-gallon pot with soil.

CALENDAR

SATURDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekend fun run of 3 to 6 miles, with all paces and abilities welcome. Meet at 8 a.m. at the Yakima Greenway鈥檚 Gleed parking lot, at the northwest corner of Highway 12 and Old Naches Highway behind McIlrath Fruit.

MONDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekly swim at Lake Myron. The group gathers at 6 p.m. with a kayaker and others on shore to keep an eye on swimmers and their gear.

WEDNESDAY: The Hard Core Running Club will host its weekly fun run at Franklin Park at 6 p.m. There will be options for a track workout or running on the streets.

GETTING OUTDOORS

TUESDAY: The Cascadians will host a hike of 5 miles round trip with 862 feet of elevation gain at the Robinson Canyon loop west of Ellensburg. There are some forested areas and road walking, featuring a view of Mt. Stuart and lunch on the trail. Drivers need a Discover Pass. Go to for more details.

NEXT THURSDAY: The Cascadians will hike 5 miles round trip with 400 feet of elevation gain to Mammoth Rock (also known as Roslyn slickrock) and Exclamation Point Rock in the Teanaway Community Forest north of Cle Elum, followed by a stop in Roslyn for coffee, ice cream, etc. if time allows.
