SPOKANE, Wash. 鈥 Yakama Tribal found itself on the wrong combination of cold-shooting, hot-shooting in its Class 1B state consolation game Saturday morning at the Spokane Arena.
The Eagles fought essentially to a draw in the first quarter against Pomeroy but their own cold shooting 鈥 29 percent in the half 鈥 and Pomeroy鈥檚 marksmanship 鈥 60 percent 鈥 led to an 18-point swing in the second quarter and the Pirates went on to post a 69-47 victory in the game for third and fifth place.
Pomery, which made 15 of 25 first-half shots, outscored Yakama Tribal 21-3 in the second quarter to open a 40-19 lead. Although the Eagles cut into the lead slightly in the third, their cold shooting carried over into the second half, preventing them from making a serious charge.
Yakama Tribal (21-7) made 7 of 24 shots in the first half and 11 of 37 (30 percent) in the second half to finish 18 of 61 (29.5 percent). Adding to its struggles, YT attempted only six free throws, making two.
Pomeroy finished the game at 51 percent (24-47), including 10 of 19 from 3-point range (53 percent).
Bryan Strom had 20 points and Isaiah Strom 17 to lead Yakama Tribal, which despite the loss, earned its third straight state trophy. The fifth place matches their 2016 showing with those two sandwiching a fourth place last season.
