Central Washington University鈥檚 Museum of Culture and Environment new exhibit will be on display starting Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, through May 3.
The exhibit, 鈥溾橰oots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge, Shared Science鈥 explores the knowledge of Native peoples and cutting-edge western science, providing insight into how humans can improve our relationship with the natural world,鈥 a news release from CWU stated.
鈥淩oots of Wisdom,鈥 designed for ages 9-14 years and enjoyable by everyone, shares voices of elders and youth, storytelling, hands-on interactives, multimedia and graphics from four Native cultures.
The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Tulalip Tribes, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society in Hawaii contributed to the exhibit.
Visitors will explore examples of applying complementary solutions to ecological and health challenges.
鈥淭he intent of the exhibit is to help visitors understand the important issues facing Indigenous communities, discover innovative ways Native peoples are solving challenges, and strengthen the growing movement towards sustainability and the reclamation of age-old practices,鈥 the release stated.
An opening event for 鈥淩oots of Wisdom鈥 will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. Museum staff and CWU students and faculty will recognize Indigenous communities while attendees explore the new exhibit. The event is open to the CWU community and members of the public.
The CWU Museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The museum is in Dean Hall on the CWU campus, 1200 Wildcat Way, Ellensburg. Email museum@cwu.edu with questions or for more information.
